Goat camp and combing 2015

Very little can better seeing a baby goat born, watch it wobble to its feet, and take its first uncertain steps. Add to that the pride and satisfaction and utter awe of combing out handfuls of luxurious cashmere fiber from that same baby goat on its first birthday, and you get an inkling of what it means to be a Cashmere Goat breeder!
These are the magical moments that make all the work that led up to it, truly meaningful, and is why we keep at it - the life of a goat herder is a mixture of total exhaustion paid back by joy and appreciation of the basics: "life on a farm" is just that!

GOAT CAMP Come and experince hands-on life on a Cashmere Goat Farm!! From mid April to mid June we will be combing all of our (200+) goats and YOU can come and help..........from the first of May through the end of May we also expect our babies to be born and YOU can be here for that too!!!
Goat COMBING? Yes, whether you knew it or not, on our farm, Cashmere goats are HAND-COMBED in the spring to harvest the wonderful, unbelievably soft cashmere fiber which forms the goats' winter insulation. It grows in the winter to keep the goat warm and then falls out in the spring - just like your dog!. You just have to be there at the right time to comb it out as your goat sheds at the end of the winter!
This is where YOU come in! You can actually participate in the annual spring combing by staying with us on our farm in Tuscany and COMBING GOATS. Now THAT'S a truly authentic farm experience!!! and something you'll be able to boast about to all your envious fellow knitters - spinners - weavers, and fiber addicts alike!!!
Part of the attraction of a day spent Goat Combing is that we will teach you everything about Cashmere goats -
You'll also learn each goat's name, his or her's habits (the good and the bad), an explanation of every step of transformation of the raw fiber through to the finished product, be it hand-woven or hand-knitted
Hand spinners will be particularly interested in our RAW FIBER: the cashmere fiber as it comes off in the comb - you can take home your own bagful and spin it the way you like! And then create something magnificent with it once you are home!!
Our fiber diameter gets finer with every generation, and the length has increased to over 7 cm in some goats. We're very pleased with our results and know you will come away from a day's combing filled with inspiration and anticipation - there really is nothing like harvesting your own Cashmere from a real goat!! And you are always in time to sign up with our ADOPT A KID program to keep up with your favorite baby
