Downstairs

KITCHEN, DINING, DOUBLE BEDROOM, BATH

As were all the farmhouses built over a century ago, La Penisola farmhouse was built into the side of a hill, and the downstairs was used to house the animals.  This was for safety, but also for taking advantage of the heat the animals and their bedding could produce.  In those days there was no heating (except for a smoky fireplace), no insulating, and as few windows as possible.

During restoration, the original beams were sanded and re-utilized; the original hand-made brick floor tiles were removed and re-laid:  original Tuscan 'cotto' tiles, some as much as 6 inches thick.

The former stall (now the kitchen) now opens out onto a pergola for 'al fresco' meals, with a heavy plank table and comfortable chairs + barbecue, overlooking the 6 x 12 meter pool (see the photo upper right, taken by one of our guests November 2012).  This is undoubtedly where you will be spending most of your 'relax' time:  a place to meet after your day as a tourist, after a dip in the pool, this is the best place to enjoy the sunset dipping down over the 'perfect' Tuscan landscape.

Ours is truly a magnificant view - undulating hills, vineyards, woods and unplowed fields......thanks to stringent building regulations, no modern buildings in sight, nor there ever be; a difficult table to get up from!

From the dining area a corridor leads past a small, bedroom with double bed, with iron bedstead, and a complete bath with shower, WC, sink and bidet + storage

The downstairs comunicates with the upper floor via a wooden staicase which is NOT SUITABLE for toddlers
